Help students develop an appreciation of the importance of marine ecosystems to the global environment and human life in this STEM trip to Hawaii.
Focus on the land, sea, air and space as students use concepts from geography and biology to understand Hawaii's unique ecosystem. Students will learn about the unique marine biodiversity surrounding Hawaii, the islands conservation efforts and the volcanic geology. Students will leave with a richer understanding of the fragility of our world's climate, with visits to the Punalu'u Beach, Volcanoes National Park and the UH Hilo Marine Science department. Furthermore, students will also develop an appreciation of how experts in the STEM fields are working to protect the world we live in.

With a STEM focus centred around geography, biology, the environment and space, this trip is not only educational but inspiring and actionable. This trip can be fully customised to meet curriculum and attainment targets. You may also want to allow some extra time to sample some of Hawaii's most famous sport – surfing! Or, participate in a Zipline or ATV tour at Kualoa Ranch, see the area where Jurassic Park and King Kong were filmed! Speak with one of our training consultants about our STEM trips to Hawaii.
Home to unique geological and biological ecosystems, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park extends from sea level to two of the world's most active volcanoes - Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. Not only are volcanoes impressive land makers, but they are also destructive beasts. Kīlauea and Mauna Loa are responsible for creating the Hawaiian Island chain and continue to add to the island of Hawaii today. Mauna Loa is the biggest mountain on Earth, sitting 8,230m higher than Mount Everest from the sea floor. Take in the magnitude of this National Park, proudly displaying over 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution in the Hawaiian Emperor Seamount chain.
Experts in marine science education, the Marine Science Program at UH Hilo will give your students the extraordinary opportunity to discover the unique marine environments surrounding Hawaii. Students will take part in a program that includes hands-on laboratory and field experience, inquiry-based instruction, and direct interactive learning. Students will leave UH Hilo with a greater understanding of the world’s oceans and an appreciation of the importance of marine ecosystems to the global environment and life on earth.
Punaluʻu Beach is Hawaii's most famous beach. It is known for its black sand, coconut trees and turtle spotting. Learn about how the famous black sand originated, how conservation efforts have enabled the turtle population to swell and how the strong ocean currents at this beach contribute to Hawaii's popular surf culture. The beach sits in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and the sand is made up primarily of basalt, created by volcanic activity. As lava flowed into the ocean, it cooled and exploded. Punaluʻu Beach is also home to powerful ocean currents. To preserve this beautiful beach, removing sand or rock from Punaluʻu Beach is kapu (Kapu - forbidden).
