Kings College, the independent secondary boarding and day school based in Auckland recently embarked upon an amazing educational trip to the USA. The excursion organised by Educating Adventures, included visiting cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Las Vegas. The 17-day trip, departing from Auckland in April 2017 focused on teaching students about the artistic landmarks and centres of these world-famous American cities. Take a look at the brilliant locations the students got to visit and learn about how you can organise a similar trip of a lifetime for your school:
LA County Museum of Art: Since it opened in 1965, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has been devoted to collecting works of art that span both history and geography, in addition to representing Los Angeles’ uniquely diverse population. Today LACMA is the largest art museum in the Western United States with a collection that includes nearly 130,000 objects dating from antiquity to the present, encompassing the geographic world and nearly the entire history of art.
Getty Center: The Center is one of two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum and draws 1.3 million visitors annually. It is well-known for its architecture, gardens and views overlooking Los Angeles, as well as its featured pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures and decorative arts; and 19th and 20thcentury American, Asian and European photographs.
Art Institute of Chicago: The Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) is an encyclopaedic art museum located in Chicago’s Grant Park. It features a collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in its permanent collection. Tracing its history to a free art school and gallery founded in 1866, it is associated with the School of Art Institute of Chicago. At one million square feet, it is the second largest art museum in the United States, after the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Last year it was voted America’s number 1 museum by TripAdvisor!
The Guggenheim: This museumis the permanent home of a renowned and continuously expanding collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern and contemporary art and features special exhibitions throughout the year. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the cylindrical museum building, wider at the top than at the bottom, was conceived as a “temple of the spirit” and is one of the 20th century’s most important architectural landmarks.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Known as “The Met”, this New York museum houses over 5,000 years’ worth of art from all corners of the globe. Founded in 1870, part of its mission is to encourage and develop the study of fine arts and the application of arts to manufacture and practical life. It is the largest art museum in the United States and is among the most visited art museums in the world.
MoMA: Founded in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art in midtown Manhattan was the first museum devoted to the modern era. Today, MoMA’s rich and varied collection offers a panoramic overview of contemporary art, from the innovative European paintings and sculptures of the 1880’s to today’s film, design and performance art.
Educating Adventures organised all of this plus much more! They took the stress out of the planning and execution of this trip by working closely with the teachers to ensure the bespoke itinerary would be both fun-filled and educational. Students not only got to make lifelong memories with their friends but they also received a lot of educational benefits from learning out of the traditional classroom environment.
